Disaster Recovery In The Cloud With Rubrik
Posted on May 11, 2020 3:07 am

Data is one of the most valuable assets of any company. Loss of data can cause irreversible damage to your business. It can affect your reputation, customer-base, and employee productivity.

It’s difficult to predict when a disaster like this will occur, and how widespread the impact will be. But you can control how you respond and how successfully you can recover from it.

Disaster recovery in cloud computing is an effective solution to minimize the effects of disaster on business performance. Keep reading to learn disaster recovery in the cloud with Rubrik and how to perform it without a hassle!

Why is Disaster Recovery in Cloud Computing Important?

Disaster recovery in cloud computing provides you with a modern and effective solution, which is different from traditional disaster recovery.

Traditional disaster recovery means you need to build a remote disaster recovery site. This also means you need to support on-site. So disaster recovery and data protection are manual and can be a difficult process.

But disaster recovery in cloud computing involves storing data in the cloud, which is sent to a secondary site in case of a disaster. Cloud computing services like Rubrik can be accessed from anywhere and backup is automated. That means disaster recovery in cloud computing requires minimal input from the client.

By creating, testing, and updating a disaster recovery plan for your business or organization, you can prepare for any disaster to ensure the safety of your data. An effective plan should consider potential threats, comprehensive strategies, business infrastructure, and critical assets.

You can then use cloud computing services in disaster recovery to design a plan and automate each step of the process toward recovery.

Using Cloud Disaster Recovery With Rubrik vs. Traditional Disaster Recovery

The core aspect of traditional disaster recovery is a secondary data center. This center can store secondary copies of important data, and you are then able to fail over production workloads.

A traditional disaster recovery on-premises site usually includes a dedicated facility for the infrastructure with employees for maintenance. It also includes sufficient server capacity, so that you know you’ll have a high level of operational performance and can scale up or down. Also, internet connectivity with large bandwidth to allow for remote access is needed.

Disaster recovery in cloud computing effectively deals with the issues of traditional disaster recovery and means you don’t need to build a physical site. You also then don’t need the additional hardware and support.

You can also more easily scale up and down by adding more cloud computing resources. Also, one of the biggest benefits is that you can store backed up data across many locations, which eliminates the single point of failure.

How Do You Use Rubrik for Disaster Recovery in the Cloud?

There are many approaches to moving data to the cloud. Rubrik enables data archiving to the cloud for users, and helps users to automate the backup and recovery of their data.

Rubrik also gives users tools that will help them build out disaster recovery options. The three most important capabilities of this platform are CloudOut, CloudOn, and Cloud Cluster.

CloudOut will achieve backup data. Rubrik sends this data to storage platforms like Azure Blob Storage or Amazon S3 for quick access.

CloudOn means instantiating on-premise workloads in the cloud for disaster recovery. This is also used for cloud migrations. Finally, Cloud Cluster means Rubrik is in the cloud protecting workloads.

Using Rubrik to Backup and Restore for Hot Site

By using Rubrik software, you’re able to protect on-premises applications. Rubrik will then archive the backup data to the cloud, using CloudOut, after a particular retention period that would be predefined.

If a disaster does occur, a Rubrik client could use CloudOn to launch a new Amazon EC2 or Azure VM by using the archived backups.

For Hot Site, CloudOn can use the disaster recovery site in the cloud and refresh server images as needed. Cloud Cluster can protect the cloud environment if you’re in an active/active situation, while an on-premises Rubrik solution protects on-premises infrastructure. This will provide a platform to protect and manage data from multiple clouds and sites!

How to Use Rubrik With a Pilot Light

In this scenario, Rubrik can create and save cloud server images as new backups. These are then archived to the cloud, so CloudOn can be used in a Pilot Light situation.

This gives Rubrik users flexibility because they can have images available to launch new instances or VMs in the event of a disaster. It will also prevent them from incurring costs from always running servers in the cloud.

In the Pilot Light scenario, core components stay up and running, while receiving either continuous or periodic updates from production. Rubrik might be used to refresh these core components, either using CloudOn or a Cloud Cluster, depending on the RTO or RPO that’s required.

If a disaster happens, users can launch new server instances or VMs using the VM images from CloudOn. The servers are connected to the core components. This creates a full disaster recovery site with user traffic sent to it.

Using Rubrik With Warm Standby

Very similar to the Pilot Light option is the Warm Standby option. The difference is that along with running core components, CloudOn is used to creating server images and launching a smaller version of the production.

With Warm Standby, users can let CloudOn create server images, which can be done before using a tool to launch a subset of instances or VMs. So if disaster does happen, traffic can be rerouted to the disaster recovery site in the cloud to allow for the initial production traffic.

In general, Rubrik can help users create an effective disaster recovery plan. So regardless of the approach you take, this platform has a lot of solutions to protect customer data, move it to the cloud, and create a disaster recovery environment in the cloud.

Learn How to Use Rubrik for Disaster Recovery in the Cloud

Disaster recovery in cloud computing is an effective solution for modern companies. By using Rubrik to access your backed up data from anywhere, you can ensure that disaster recovery will require less manual input from the client than the traditional model.
